What are Wind Insurance Discounts?
Insurance companies offering homeowners insurance
in Florida are required by Florida Statute 6267.0629 to provide "discounts, credits,
or other rate differentials... " for construction techniques required
by the Florida Building Code that reduce damage in windstorms. The
insurance company discounts began in 2003 and will save homeowners on
their premium every year thereafter.
The construction features that are considered in the statewide discount
plan include roof coverings, roof shape, secondary water
resistance, roof deck attachment, roof to wall connection, opening protection,
terrain exposure type, and design windspeed.

Homes
Built in Accordance with the
2001 Florida Building Code
|
| Many
existing homes qualify for discounts for features that are already
present
on your home. Analysis of recent inspections has shown
that over 98% of the inspected homes have qualified for at least one credit and
more than 85% qualified for 3 or more credits. While the
percentage of the discounts varies by insurance company, many people recovered
the inspection fee in less than two years; often the
discount received in the first year exceeds the inspection fee. The savings will
accrue each subsequent year of the policy and recertification is not required
at policy renewal time. |
New homes
built to the minimum requirements of the Florida Building Code
will usually qualify for discounts of 25% to 50% of the
wind portion of the homeowner's insurance premium. The amount of the discount
depends on the new home construction features and
the particular insurance company. The wind portion of the homeowner's insurance
premium ranges from about 20% up to 70% of the
total insurance premium. Hence, the discounts constitute a significant savings
to the new home buyer.
All new Florida homes built to the minimum standards of the FBC will qualify
for wind insurance discounts due to the improved design
standards in the Code.
For homeowners to receive the discounts, insurance companies require certification
of the construction features on special forms. |

Reports for Homeowners
IntraRisk provides the homeowners with
two reports: Insurance company required forms, and a summary of findings
of the survey.
The first report consists of the specific forms required by your insurance
company to provide the appropriate discounts based on the
survey. The second report summarizes the findings and identifies both
acceptable and unacceptable items such as shutters that do not
qualify for credits.
